This article is for informational purposes only. It is not intended to be used in place of professional advice, treatment, or care in any way. Lawyers, law students, judges, and other legal professionals in Massachusetts can find more on scheduling a Free & Confidential appointment with a licensed clinician here.

In this edition of Webinars for Busy Lawyers, Stephen Gallagher will get you ready to change your thinking and embrace reality and plan for the transitions you’ll need to make in your career as a lawyer.

Do you think it’s only people aged 50+ who are dealing with the effects of growing older? Aging affects us at every point throughout our lives, yet we often avoid actively addressing how to deal with the implications of time as it passes by throughout our whole lives.

Transition and succession planning has never been easy for most lawyers. The emotions involved in working toward the inevitability of winding down one’s life work and transferring a generation of clients to another firm or a younger attorney can prove to be an intense mixture of pride, anxiety, and loss.

This program is designed for the following audiences to find a safe haven that will allow lawyers to come together to gain assistance for mastering life transitions.

  • Solo and Small Firm Practitioners who are planning on living forever
  • Young Lawyers and Law Students who are looking to gain a foothold in the profession
  • Managing Partners interested in exploring new approaches for law firm succession

We’ll cover the following key elements to empower your development through the transitions of life as a lawyer:

  • Understanding the Essentials of Change and Transition
  • Stages for Lawyer Transition
  • Designing Your Life
  • Special Needs of Solo Practitioners
  • Creating a Business That Can Thrive Without You

About the Expert

Stephen P. Gallagher founded Leadershipcoach.us after serving as the Practice Management Advisor for the New York State Bar Association from 1990 – 2003. He took early retirement to start his own executive coaching business, where he focuses on transition planning for the legal marketplace.

Stephen holds a master degree in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania. He started his career working with law students as a career counselor at Temple University School of Law. His own career transition took him through several mid-sized law firms, the legal department of a major bank corporation and eventually to NYSBA where he spent 13-years teaching and coaching solo and small firm practitioners throughout New York State.

Over the years, Stephen has become a leading advocate for helping lawyers and law firms design new approaches to better serve the large number of baby boomer attorneys preparing to transition away from full-time law practice.

Another of his passions is working with young attorneys seeking growth in the profession. People don’t live their lives in silos, and lawyers looking to move away from full time law practice cannot make this transition without forming better working relationships with young lawyers who are interested in moving into full time law practice.
