Updates from SuperMom: Monthly Support for Lawyers + Law Students

Our Free & Confidential monthly support meetings for mothers in the legal profession will return from summer break on September 25, 2019!

With the first monthly meeting of SuperMom of this school year approaching, we invite lawyers, law students, and judges in Massachusetts who are mothers to join. Find details and register here. In collaboration with the WBA Parents’ Forum, we first launched SuperMom three years ago and continue to hold monthly meetings running from September through June on the last Wednesday of each month at noon — in person and by video or phone. We provide lunch for those attending in person. There’s no obligation to participate each month, registration is always open, and new participants are welcome to start attending any month. Need to bring your baby with you? No problem.

SuperMom can help you find the connection you need. Whether you’re trying to navigate returning to work after maternity leave or trying to create better balance across your roles as lawyer and mother to young children, your peers in the legal profession can help you reflect objectively on the realities you’re facing and offer practical suggestions. As businesses capitalize on self-care slinging quick fixes, we need to focus on practicing deeper self-care to avoid burnout in such demanding roles. September is both Self-Care Awareness Month and Recovery Awareness Month, encouraging us to recognize commonly marketed self-care shortcuts to mothers of young children as insufficient to all and hazardous to many. Earlier this month Good Morning America featured ‘A pump-and-dump kind of day’: How wine-mom culture shifted from funny memes to unhappy hangovers‘. The most demanding roles require more than quick coping strategies to sustain — they require real support.

Carving out time in your schedule to receive support is essential to your well-being as a lawyer and as a mother, and especially as both. Taking time to discuss your challenges and concerns with others who understand them is the only way to receive new input that can lead to real change. Group members can express a particular concern about a possible change that others have personal experience with and can help to alleviate or otherwise inform. It isn’t easy to reserve time to focus on yourself as a mother and lawyer, but remember that your clients and kids need you to refill your cup consistently to pour into theirs.
