Unemployment has been rising since the pandemic began. As of June, the US was officially in a recession (CNBC). In August, Massachusetts was reported the having the highest unemployment rate in the US for the second month (WBUR). And recent headlines for the legal profession haven’t been promising with recent headlines such as Layoffs Hit Two Am Law 100 Firms, More Cuts Coming as Firms Slim Down to Keep Partner Pockets Full, and FYI Law School Graduates: It’s Time to Apply for Babysitting Jobs.

Whether a period of unemployment is prolonged or brief, it can be one of the most stressful experiences. We can handle that stress more successfully with support from others.

Twice Monthly Group Meetings

Our new Free & Confidential Job Search Support Group will meet online twice each month on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays, beginning on October 6th. These online group meetings are designed specifically for lawyers, law students, and other legal professionals who are facing unemployment or underemployment. We may arrange guest speakers on various topics. Group meetings will regularly focus on:

  • Providing support during this uniquely stressful time,
  • Offering practical skills to aid in your job search efforts, and
  • Providing social support to address the many obstacles that arise — emotional health, mindset, helpful routines, self-care, etc.

Find out more and sign up for the group here.

(First, it’s key to recognize that positive thinking during your work search is not delusional optimism, as discussed in this post.) Our new Job Search Support Group will offer more regular peer support than presentations in past program series we’ve run with the MBA, but will be responsive to group needs and may arrange for guest presentations on helpful topics.
