About the Expert
Susan Smith Blakely is a lawyer, author and motivational speaker. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, with distinction, and Georgetown University Law Center, where she taught legal writing in a fellowship program.
After 25 years as a practicing attorney with experience in both the private and public sectors, Ms. Blakely retired as a law firm partner in 2006 to pursue writing, speaking and consulting on topics related to women lawyers through her company LegalPerspectives LLC. As a practicing lawyer, a public sector chief of staff, and more recently a business entrepreneur, she understands the challenges of both law and business.
Her books include: Best Friends at the Bar: What Women Need to Know about a Career in the Law (2009); Best Friends at the Bar: The New Balance for Today’s Woman Lawyer (2012); Best Friends at the Bar: Top-Down Leadership for Women Lawyers (2015; and What Millennial Lawyers Want: A Bridge from the Past to the Future of Law Practice (2018), all published by Wolters Kluwer/Aspen Publishers.
Ms. Blakely speaks on the subjects addressed in her books at colleges and universities, law schools, law firms, and law organizations. She also provides individual and group career counseling, and her initiatives include are a multi-session program to supplement law firm Women’s Initiatives and a program to develop soft skills in junior lawyers to enhance career success and leadership potential.

Ms. Blakely lives in Virginia outside of Washington, DC with her husband, also a lawyer. They have two children, a daughter and son, who practice law in New York City and Nashville, respectively.
