Boundaries are important. For instance, in sports they define the area of play. On roads they tell us where we can drive and where we can’t. In personal relationships they mark the emotional and physical limits one establishes in a relationship. But what about professional boundaries?

Professional boundaries are designed to provide the framework for a healthy relationship between lawyers, their clients, and their work. Without boundaries problems can arise, schedules can implode, and the lawyer can lose a sense of work/life balance. The failure to set healthy boundaries can also create environments that negatively effect your mental health and are ripe for potential ethical violations.

In this session, we will cover:

  • the importance of setting boundaries,
  • how to set boundaries, and
  • the positive effects it can have for your work and your well-being.

About the Expert

Danielle Hall serves as the Executive Director for the Kansas Lawyers Assistance Program. In addition to overseeing the daily operations, she administers a variety of programs for lawyers and law students who need assistance due to a substance abuse, mental health, or law practice management related issue. Prior to her appointment in 2019, Danielle worked as the Kansas Office of the Disciplinary Administrator, where in addition to prosecuting attorney misconduct cases she coordinated the Attorney Diversion Program.  As part of the program, she provided training to lawyers in the areas of law practice management and technology and assisted lawyers in overcoming stress and burnout. Danielle is a member of the Policy Committee for the Institute for Well-Being in the Law and is also a member of the Executive Committee for the Kansas Lawyer Well-Being Task Force. She serves as co-chair of the Kansas Women Attorneys Association Minority Women in the Profession Committee, is a member of the Kansas Bar Association Law Practice Management and Ethics Advisory Committees, and is also regular contributor to the Kansas Bar Association Law Practice Management and Technology Blog. She is an active member in the ABA Law Practice Division, having served on several committees. Danielle received her received her B.A. in 2006 from Washburn University and her J.D. in 2009 from Washburn School of Law.
