This program presented by the High Conflict Institute will be led by experts Megan Hunter, MBA and Bill Eddy, LCSW, Esq.. You will learn basic information about five high-conflict personality disorders (narcissistic, borderline, antisocial, paranoid and histrionic), and some brain science behind their behavior. Common conflict dynamics are addressed, including their preoccupation with blaming others (their Targets of Blame), their drive to acquire Negative Advocates, and their ability to mislead and confuse legal professionals and decision-makers.
We focus on managing high-conflict clients, individually and in joint dispute resolution. Four key skills will be presented as the CARS Method® including: Connecting with Empathy, Attention and Respect (EAR Statements®); Analyzing Alternatives and Proposals; Responding to Hostility and Misinformation (including writing emails that are Brief, Informative, Friendly and Firm – BIFF); and Setting Limits with Empathy, Attention and Respect – and Consequences.
This interactive program addresses your issues and will be useful to litigators, mediators and judges.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify the interpersonal conflict dynamics of five “high conflict” personality disorders.
2. Apply brain research to calming high-conflict emotions and behavior with EAR Statements.
3. Apply four skills for calming litigants and focusing on problem-solving.
4. Set limits on difficult behavior while maintaining calm and cooperation.
5. Manage negative advocates and professional splitting.
6. Learn to lower expectations; focus litigants on choices for the future regarding their own decisions, behavior and goals.
7. Consider all three theories of the high-conflict case.
